Southport Spotlights Musical Theatre Society

Charity number: 502783
Southport Spotlights Musical Theatre (fondly known as “Spotties”) was formed in 1953 under its previous title “Southport Amateur Operatic Society”. The name was changed in 2012 to better reflect the kind of shows we were performing.

Over our six decades, we have won multiple awards from the National Operatic & Dramatic Association (NODA) including Best Musical for The Drowsy Chaperone (also Best Overall Production for the whole of the North West) and Spamalot, with Best Musical nominations for The Producers, Sweeney Todd, My Fair Lady, The Wedding Singer, Sister Act and Little Shop of Horrors. See a list of all our awards here.

Together with these well-known shows, we like to perform shows that are not so well known but just as fabulous. These include “Acorn Antiques”, “Eurobeat – Almost Eurovision”, “Lucky Stiff” and “I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change”.

Recently we have received encouraging messages from the American lyricist Chad Beguelin for our show “The Wedding Singer” and from Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber no less for our most recent fabulous production of “Sunset Boulevard” which received such acclaim from our audiences.

In 1979 our youth group, SONG (Southport Operatic New Generation) was set up, to encourage the younger generation to perform and many have gone on to the West End stage and even Hollywood. Both our senior and junior sections continue to flourish.

We are a very friendly society and always encourage new members whether it be to perform or help backstage in a variety of roles – or even just making the tea! We rehearse Mondays and Thursdays at Greenbank School, Hastings Road, Hillside, Southport from 7.30 pm to 10.00 pm.
